New Tortilla Heritage Workshop Highlighting Mexico’s Culinary History at Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Riviera Maya, Mexico (October 23, 2025) -Grand Velas Riviera Maya introduces a new immersive Tortilla Heritage Workshop as part of its ongoing commitment to showcasing Mexican cuisine, culture and traditions. The new offering was launched last month at The Best of Mexico: Tacology, a multi-day celebration of the taco — from its street-food roots to high-end reinterpretations by top chefs.
Through storytelling, technique, and taste, guests are guided on a journey that begins with the history of corn in Mexican culture, tracing its sacred role from ancient civilizations to modern kitchens. Participants discover the extraordinary diversity of native maize varieties and experience the transformative nixtamalization process, where corn becomes masa, the foundation of tortillas and a large number of Mexican dishes. The experience then turns to salsas as a cultural expression, showcasing how different Mexican regions reflect their identity through flavor. Guests can select their own roasted vegetables and then grind, mix, and season ingredients using traditional molcajetes. The signature salsas are the perfect complement for the freshly made tortillas.
Designed to be both educational and deeply sensory, the workshop emphasizes hands-on participation. Attendees don aprons and work with authentic tools, tortilla presses, clay bowls, kitchen towels, and baskets, immersing themselves in the textures and aromas of Mexican cooking. The session concludes with a tasting celebrating the vibrant harmony of corn and salsa.
The new workshop was inspired by the guest-favorite Tortilla Workshop presented during the resort's Tacology festival earlier this year. Due to overwhelming enthusiasm, Grand Velas Riviera Maya has introduced this new, standalone experience to give guests an intimate, ongoing opportunity to explore Mexico's culinary roots in depth.
