Traditional Mexican hot chocolate is made with cacao, rather than chocolate chips or chocolate powder. The cacao for the hot chocolate is from Tabasco, where more than 70% of Mexico's cacao is grown. The Aztecs and the Mayans were the first peoples to make and drink chocolate for thousands of years before it was discovered by the old world. Today, it is commonly served with breakfast or as a snack and mostly consumed around religious holidays like Christmas, Three Kings Day, and Day of the Dead.
